　　标准式西施犬的外貌应是全身被长毛所覆盖，头盖为圆形，宽度一定要广，耳朵大，有长而漂亮的被毛覆盖。耳根部要比头顶稍低，两耳距离要大。体躯圆长，背短，但保持水平。颈缓倾斜，头部高抬，四肢较短，为被毛所覆盖。尾巴高耸，多为羽毛状，向背的方向卷曲向上，长毛密生，不可卷曲，底毛则为羊毛状。据此特征，在对西施犬美容时，体躯的被毛由背正中线向两侧分开，背线的左右3厘米处涂上适量油脂以防被毛断裂。为了防止腹部的毛缠结和便于行走，对腹下的被毛应以剪子剪掉1厘米左右。为了使翘起的尾巴更好看，可在尾根部剪去0.5厘米宽的被毛。脚周围多余的毛，应尽可能地剪去。让犬站在修剪台上，对其体毛的下部（下摆）修剪成稍比体高长些（即毛的长度比体高稍长），但是太长就会影响其行动，不能充分发挥其活泼的特性。　　西施犬的毛质稍脆，容易折断和脱落，脸部的毛也长，容易遮盖双眼，影响视线，因此，对这些长毛应实施结扎，以防折断和脱落，也可增加美观。结扎的方法是：先将鼻梁上的长毛用梳子沿正中线向两侧分开，再将鼻梁到眼角的毛梳分为上下两部分，从眼角起向后头部将毛呈半圆形上下分开，梳毛者用左手握住由眼到头顶部上方的长毛，以细目梳子逆毛梳理，这样可使毛蓬松，拉紧头顶部的毛，绑上橡皮筋，再结上小蝴蝶结即可。也可将头部的长毛分左右两侧各梳上一个结、或编成两个辫子。
